There is a captivating history to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just across the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall gaming is not permitted. Eight gambling dens are established in a generally tiny space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect spot, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income acquired from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 17:00, and despite the fact visas are supposedly necessary to pass, there are ways around this, as is true of many border crossings.
The original Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored boat casino, features one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 table games. The Naga gambling den is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long followed. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machines and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and 66 of the common table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international vacation and hotel building that features a number of luxuries on top of the casino, which has 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight gaming tables.
