There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where casino wagering is not legal. Eight gambling dens are based in a relatively small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent destination, a three to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income acquired from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a number of restrictions constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; still, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are allegedly required to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of most border crossings.
The original Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship gambling den, contains 150 one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are 150 slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 one armed bandits and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the normal tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around vacation and hotel complex that highlights numerous amenities on top of the casino, which provides ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight table games.
