There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling den gambling is not legal. Eight gambling dens are established in a relatively small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent area, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are apparently required to cross, there are ways around this, as is correct of many border crossings.
The first Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship gambling hall, highlights 150 slots and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling den is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long followed. A total of 150 slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slots and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 table games, including 87 punto banco (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around vacation and hotel compound that highlights a number of luxuries on top of the casino, which houses ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and 88 table games.
